Shenzhen Day Trips: Escape the City

Written by Tian Yang · Shenzhen Local

Shenzhen's location is its hidden advantage. To the south: Hong Kong. To the east: beaches and mountains. To the west: the Pearl River Delta. Within one to two hours in any direction, you can be on a beach, climbing a mountain, exploring an ancient village, or eating dim sum in another city entirely.

Everything on this list is doable as a same-day return from Shenzhen. Public transport or Didi gets you there for all of them.

Dapeng Peninsula — best beach day

The Dapeng Peninsula is Shenzhen's eastern arm, jutting out into the South China Sea. It's where Shenzhen keeps its best beaches, its oldest fortress, and its most relaxed vibes. Feels like a completely different city from the glass-and-steel CBD.

Dapeng Fortress (大鹏所城)

A 600-year-old Ming Dynasty coastal fortress, originally built to defend against Japanese pirates. The stone walls and gates are still standing, and the narrow streets inside are lined with old houses, small museums, and snack shops. Free entry. Quiet on weekdays, busier on weekends. One of the few genuinely old things in young Shenzhen.

Jiaochangwei (较场尾)

A beach village right next to Dapeng Fortress. What used to be a fishing village is now a strip of guesthouses, cafes, and surf shops along a sandy beach. The surf culture is emerging — you can rent a board and take a lesson. It's casual and low-key. Good for an afternoon of wandering, coffee, and ocean views.

Xichong Beach (西涌)

The best beach near Shenzhen. Cleaner water, less crowded than Dameisha, with a long stretch of sand backed by hills. Camping is possible (bring your own gear or rent on-site). The downside: it's the farthest beach from the city center, about 1.5–2 hours by car from Futian.

Getting there

Bus E11 from Futian to Dapeng, or Didi (1–1.5 hours from Futian). Weekday tip: go Monday to Thursday if possible. Weekends, especially in summer, the entire peninsula fills up with Shenzhen residents escaping the city. Traffic backs up and beaches get packed.

Optional overnight: If you want a slower pace, stay overnight in Jiaochangwei. Guesthouses run ¥200–500/night. A beach sunset followed by a morning at Dapeng Fortress is a nice combo.

Dongguan — more than factories

Dongguan gets a bad reputation as "just a factory city." It's not. Or at least, not entirely.

Songshan Lake (松山湖)

Huawei moved part of its operations here, building a campus styled after European towns — there's a "Paris" section, a "Heidelberg" section, a "Bruges" section. It sounds absurd, and it kind of is, but the campus is genuinely impressive in scale and attention to detail. You can visit the area around the lake (the campus itself requires permission for internal areas). The lake and surrounding park are pleasant for cycling.

Kelong Ancient Village (可龙古村)

An old Cantonese village that's been mostly forgotten. Crumbling ancestral halls, overgrown courtyards, faded murals. Very few visitors, very photogenic. A 10-minute drive from Songshan Lake.

Getting there

Intercity train from Shenzhen North to Dongguan — 30 minutes, ~¥20. Fast and cheap.

Huizhou — beaches and hot springs

Huizhou is Shenzhen's weekend escape. Better beaches than Shenzhen's own, plus hot springs for winter trips.

Shuangyue Bay (双月湾)

Double Moon Bay — named for its crescent shape. Arguably the best beach within easy reach of Shenzhen: cleaner water, wider sand, fewer people than Dameisha. The catch: it's about 2 hours from Shenzhen by car, which makes it tight as a day trip. Better as an overnight if you can swing it.

Xunliao Bay (巽寮湾)

More developed than Shuangyue Bay, with resorts, water sports, and family-friendly facilities. Easier to access and more set up for day visitors.

Hot springs in Longmen (龙门)

A winter option: natural hot springs about 2 hours northwest of Shenzhen. Several resort-style hot spring parks. Good for a cold-weather day trip when the beach is off the table.

Getting there

HSR to Huizhou South Station (30 minutes) then Didi to the coast (another hour). Or drive/Didi the whole way — about 1.5–2 hours from Futian depending on traffic. For Shuangyue Bay specifically, a car is the practical choice.

Hong Kong — yes, it's a day trip

Hong Kong is right there. Literally 14 minutes by high-speed train from Futian Station to West Kowloon. Going to Hong Kong for the day from Shenzhen is like going to Brooklyn from Manhattan — it's just across the border.

Day trip ideas

Getting there

The fastest option: HSR from Futian Station to West Kowloon — 14 minutes, ~¥75. Immigration is done at the station. You can be in Tsim Sha Tsui within 30 minutes of leaving your hotel in Futian.

Other crossings: Luohu Port (walk across to HK East Rail Line), Shenzhen Bay Port (bus), or Shekou Ferry (30 min boat to HK Airport or Macau).

Visa note: Most nationalities get visa-free entry to Hong Kong (7–180 days depending on passport). This is separate from your China visa — entering HK means leaving mainland China and re-entering when you come back. Make sure your China visa allows multiple entries if you plan to return.

Zhuhai and Zhongshan

The western side of the Pearl River Delta, now much more accessible thanks to the new Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge.

Zhuhai

Lover's Road — a long coastal promenade with the Fisher Girl statue, ocean views, and the Macau skyline across the water. Zhuhai is small, clean, and relaxed. Good for a half-day of waterfront walking. You can also cross into Macau from here (Gongbei Port) if you want to add casinos and Portuguese egg tarts to your trip.

Zhongshan

Sun Yat-sen's hometown. The old town center has a laid-back charm — tree-lined streets, old shophouses, small parks. Visit the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and Former Residence for some Republican-era history. Zhongshan is a city that feels like it's not trying too hard, which is refreshing after the intensity of Shenzhen.

Getting there

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge (深中通道), opened in 2024, cut the drive from Shenzhen to Zhongshan from 2 hours to about 30 minutes. This transformed both cities into easy day-trip distance. You can also take intercity rail to Zhuhai (1–1.5 hours).
